What is 10 ball break and run rules?

The 10-ball break-and-run rules are a set of guidelines for playing 10-ball, a variation of the standard game of pool. The objective of the game is to sink all ten balls in numerical order and pocket the 10-ball last. Here are some key rules and points to remember when playing 10-ball break and run:

  1. The break is a critical shot. If the player fails to make a legal break, the incoming player has the option to accept the table as is or request a re-rack and break themselves.

  2. The player who breaks the rack must be the one to make the 10-ball in order to win the game.

  3. If the player makes a ball on the break, they continue shooting until they either miss or foul. If they miss, then the incoming player takes over.

  4. If the player makes all 10 balls in order, without missing or committing a foul, it is called a "break and run."

  5. A foul occurs when a player does not hit the lowest numbered ball on the table first, scratches (pockets the cue ball), or fails to make contact with any ball on the table.

  6. If the ball is legally pocketed on the break, it is spotted on the table. If a ball is pocketed during the course of the game, it remains out of play unless it is the 10-ball. In this case, it is spotted on the foot spot.

  7. The game ends when either the 10-ball is made legally, or the player commits a foul. If the latter happens, the opponent may choose to continue at that point or add a ball to their collection, with the game restarting.

  8. Additional rules may apply depending on the tournament or league in question. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the specific rules and regulations before playing in any competitive tournament.
